The Society for the Study of Southern Literature (SSSL) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1968, dedicated to scholarship on writings and writers of the American South. Their mission is to explore the foundations, challenges, and diversity that southern literature has to offer. SSSL welcomes members from all backgrounds who share an interest in southern literature. The organization actively promotes critical discourse about the U.S. South, contests revisionist versions of southern history, and supports scholarship that examines the multiplicity and heterogeneity of both the past and present South. They hold biennial conferences to give scholars, academics, writers and readers an opportunity to engage in dialogue and explore the rich literary heritage of the region.
