The Appalachian Literary Arts & Storytelling Festival is a community-centered event held annually on Nelsonville’s Public Square and at venues like Stuart’s Opera House, designed to celebrate and preserve Appalachian storytelling traditions in all their forms.
It brings together writers, poets, musicians, artists, educators, and storytellers—across generations—to share authentic stories through oral performance, literature, workshops, exhibits, music, and interactive activities such as puppet-making and memoir stations.
With free public admission and highlights like keynote talks, author readings, musical performances, and a playful “Liar’s Contest,” the festival cultivates a dynamic space for celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Appalachia.
