Comox Valley Writers Society

The Comox Valley Writers Society (CVWS) is a community-based organization in Courtenay, British Columbia, dedicated to supporting writers of all levels. Founded in 1964, CVWS offers a range of services to help writers develop their craft, including educational presentations, critique groups, and special events. They also host the annual North Island Writers Conference, which features workshops, panel discussions, and networking opportunities.

Member Benefits:

Members enjoy a variety of benefits, including monthly general meetings featuring guest speakers and an open mic on the third Thursday from September to June, and small writing groups of 6-8 writers based on similar genres and interests with flexible schedules. Prose and Poetry sessions take place at the Courtenay Public Library on the third Monday of each month, allowing members to listen or read their work, although Reading Night is currently suspended. The annual North Island Writers Conference in January welcomes attendees and volunteers, along with special presentations on topics relevant to writers. Members can receive assistance with book launches, including a $50 contribution for planning and on-site support, and can participate in the Beta Reader Program. Monthly newsletters keep members informed about CVWS news, community updates, and Vancouver Island literary happenings, while the website and Facebook page offer general information and updates. Members gain access to Writer-in-Residence programs at McLoughlin Gardens and Haig-Brown programs, and benefit from group membership in the Comox Valley Arts Society and McLoughlin Gardens Society. They also have the chance to win prizes through member draws such as Words on the Water and Denman Island Readers and Writers Festival, and receive free copies of BC BookWorld at monthly meetings and designated community events.
